We absolutely love using the Sirocco fans in our travel setup, which is why we used them in our old van and our new build too! They are especially useful when we are off the grid because they use minimal power (a huge plus for anyone equipped with only a small battery system). They also do a superb job of tackling the Aussie heat, are super quiet, compact and space savvy too.
In our old van we used the Sirocco II fans, but are excited to have our new build decked out with the Sirocco II Elite fans. Each model comes with a minimum two year warranty, a three speed setting (the Sirocco II Elite has four speeds), multiple timer settings, and an ultra quiet long-life motor with low power draw.
The Sirocco II is currently the only one available on the market, so we will focus more prominently on this model in this review.
The Sirocco II is quite compact and space savvy, with the option to stow them flat against the wall when not in use. They offer 360° airflow and can be easily angled to cool down different areas as needed.
We had five Sirocco II fans set up in our old van and have the same again in the new build, with one in each of the kids bunks, and another two in our bedroom and living area. They can be easily rotated, meaning we can use them to cool down the kitchen during the day, and angle them to create a fresh breeze in the bedroom of an evening.
In most cases, people don’t have super big battery systems like we are fortunate enough to have, but that’s not a concern with these fans. The Sirocco fans are so conservative with their energy consumption, that we would have five running every night, all night, and still only used about 40 amps over the entire eight hours.
Energy usage is about 1 amp per hour, per fan. In our old setup we had a 300 amp power battery (our new setup is larger again), so they don’t draw much power at all. We have included a full breakdown of the power usage for the Sirocco II below.
There are also timer options on the fans, and our daughter Maisie uses this energy saving option regularly. It proves a really useful feature when we are in hot areas that cool down considerably at night, because the fans can be set to go until 9pm, and then switch off when the cooler night air set in.
On 12 volts it draws: 0.35A High 0.22A Medium 0.12A Low
On 24 volts it draws: 0.21A High 0.11A Medium 0.06 Low
All of these details can be found on the Sirocco II product page here.
Fancy fittings and space saving perks aside, what’s a fan without the ability to keep us cool? It is kind of the point after all. This is why we love the Sirocco fans, they cool the place down really quickly, especially at night.
We have all five of our Sirocco II fans going every single night, and they are lifesavers for the kids in their bunks, especially when visiting stiflingly hot areas like the Northern Territory or Far North Queensland.
We travel to a lot of hot, unrelenting locations, and being able to cool down when you are in outback locations or isolated communities with little water is imperative! We only carried limited amounts of water in our old van (two 95L tanks, although our new build has a lot more than this), so we couldn’t simply jump in the shower to cool down. Jumping in water holes to cool down is not always possible in these areas either, with crocodiles and other water dangers to consider.
A lot of the time it is the Sirocco fans that allow us to cool our body temperature down (it’s either that or drink loads of beer, which is probably not a responsible approach).
Even though these fans don’t work like an air conditioner, they are lifesavers at night as they pump the fresh air around, which really helps to cool the whole family down.
The Sirocco fans are a breeze to clean (no pun intended!). Like most fans they do collect dust quickly, especially in outback destinations. It is very easy to unclip and disassemble them for regular cleaning.
The minimalist design of these fans and the fact they can be easily stowed flat against the wall makes them blend effortlessly with most interior decors. The Sirocco fans are also available in white and black, depending on your preferences. We opted for the white purely because it suited our decor better.
