Lion’s Den Hotel and Campground Review
Location: Rossville, QLD
Location: Rossville, QLD
The Lion’s Den camping and caravan park is nestled alongside The Lion’s Den Hotel, which is a historical pub just 28km south of Cooktown in Far North Queensland. It is 4km off the main road between Cairns and Cooktown, located at 398 Shiptons Flat Road in Rossville.
This landmark hotel has stood strong since it was established way back in 1875. It’s quaintly located amidst 100 year old Mango trees and lush bushland on the banks of the Little Annan River. Featuring quirky decorations, walls adorned with visitor’s signatures and a unique timber and iron construction, this den is a must-see for passing travellers and the perfect place to visit the ‘real’ Australia.

This iconic pub and accomodation in Northern QLD oozed character and old-worldly charm. It had a friendly atmosphere and very relaxed vibe – we ended up spending an entire afternoon at the pub. The alcohol was cheap, cold and on tap, and the generous meals were great value!
The campsite itself was green and grassy, with good large sites. Our powered site was near the toilets which was a bit smelly at times from the septic, but the amazing food and drinks helped us overlook this.
There was a little waterhole at the Lion’s Den that was safe to swim in. It was beautiful so the kids had a dip, but said it was freezing!
The Lion’s Den Hotel & Campground was certainly worth a night’s stay.
