Leichhardt Falls Free Camp Review
Location: Stokes, QLD
Location: Stokes, QLD
Leichhardt Falls Free Camp may just be one of the best free camps in Queensland. Located along the edges of Leichhardt Falls, the campsite offers a beautiful natural landscape to explore. There are cliff tops that provide an uninterrupted bird’s eye view of the water below, a cascading waterfall (during the wet season), epic sunsets and plenty of wallabies who hop past to say hi.
Camping is permitted along the edges of Leichhardt Falls and is only suitable for fully self-sufficient travellers. The falls are 77km easy of Burketown on Burketown Normanton Road in Stokes. To reach the falls you cross the Leichhardt River causeway 150km west of Normanton, and find the falls about 50km upstream from where the river enters the Gulf of Carpentaria.

This would have to be one of the best free camps we visited in QLD! The views from the cliff top were breathtaking – we even had a fire on the cliff top which was amazing.
The waterfall was not flowing when we visited, but it can become an intense torrent of flowing water during the wet season. There were loads of bird life to enjoy and fishing to be had. Zali got a few bites when she went fishing but caught nothing, despite the fact there were plenty of fish jumping through the air to check us out.
Be careful of crocs and the soft boggy sand. Whilst we didn’t see any crocodiles ourselves, we understand that many others have. The soft sand in some locations was very boggy and we needed to help another couple out on a few occasions.
This was a great spot that was definitely worth the visit – the fire on the cliff top overlooking the water was certainly the highlight for us!
Stayed here on my way to Lorella Springs,Definitely some amazing scenery and a beautiful location to camp up
Great camp when the falls are flowing. Update: 4 bars of 4G on the Telstra network.
Watch out for snakes!
Thanks mate for the update!!!
