Lake Gairdner Campground is a beautiful free site located on private property on Moina Road in Moina, Tasmania. This informal campsite is on the western side of Lake Gairdner, and stretches along the banks of the water.
This basic yet peaceful campsite is suitable for sully self-sufficient campers, and provides a perfect base for travellers wanting to check out Cradle Mountain but who want to avoid the costly National Park campsite.

Lake Gairdner Campsite was peaceful, picturesque and didn’t cost us a penny!
The campsites were stretched along the edge of the lake, with a few separate campsites that catered to different camping setups. One was larger for bigger caravans, and one was smaller for tents and vehicles. Regardless of what campsite you ended up with, the water was right alongside the site and provided a refreshing dip.
We used this campsite as a base to check out Cradle Mountain which was only 30 minutes drive away. It was probably the closest campsite to the mountain apart from the National Parks campsite which was very expensive because it was so close. It was a really cool little place to use as a base and leave our stuff when we went up the mountain – you don’t really want to take caravans up into Cradle Mountain if you can avoid it.
We didn’t spend the days at the campsite, more the afternoons after we’d come back from a day at the mountain. It was a peaceful spot to relax and sleep, with lovely views over the water and a fabulous vantage point to catch some amazing sunsets.
