Kings Canyon Resort Campground – as the name aptly suggests – gives you a front row seat for exploring the impressive Kings Canyon, along with the Watarrka National Park. The campground is located at 20049 Larapinta Drive in Petermann, Northern Territory, smack bang in the heart of the Red Centre between Ayers Rock and Alice Springs. It is at the western end of the George Gill Range about 320km southwest of Alice Springs.
Accommodation options include resort rooms, glamping, lodge rooms, and camping sites. The landscape is the perfect combination of green grass, shady trees, red dirt and sandstone, with the added bonus of a swimming pool, tennis court, restaurant and bistro too!

Kings Canyon Resort Campground was a breathtaking spot! The highlight for us was the six kilometre Kings Canyon Rim Walk that we did with the kids. It traced the top of the canyon and took us just under thee hours to complete. There was a steep climb at the beginning of the walk which locals called “Heartbreak Hill” (or “Heart Attack Hill”, due to its steepness). It took us to the top, with views of the gorge below and of the surrounding landscape.
After the walk the kids decided that it was the best walking track that they had done to date. It would have been lovely had it included a swimming hole, but this just made the kids enjoy the campground pool all the more when we returned.
The campsite itself was very comfortable. The staff were super friendly, there was plenty of shade on offer, and the Sunset Viewing Platform offered an amazing vantage point for an epic sunset of reds, oranges, and pretty pinks that reflected off the sandstone landscape.
It was a convenient place to re-fuel and get a little work done. We’d definitely stop in again.
