Location: Nicholson, QLD
Hell’s Gate Roadhouse is a clean, well-kept, and stunningly green oasis in the middle of nowhere. It’s located on Westmoreland Road in Nicholson QLD, and can be reached via the Savannah Way. The roadhouse is 50km east of the NT/QLD border and 80km north-west of Doomadgee.
All the essentials are covered at the roadhouse, with a mini-store, licensed restaurant, fuel and even an air-strip! There’s a range of different accommodation options on offer too, with something for all budgets, from ensuite cabins, to basic cabins, and grassy green powered and unpowered sites as well.

Hell’s Gate Roadhouse had exceptionally green grass that provided a nice reprise from the red dust we’d been kicking around in for weeks.
The roadhouse supplied fuel, basic supplies, alcohol (not takeaway) and meals.
We visited during COVID, which made things a little different. The roadhouse was struggling for supplies and had limited meal options and groceries. They had closed all but one of the amenity blocks in the park, however it was regularly cleaned and in a well-kept condition.
It did feel like a number of road workers used this location as accomodation and during the day the lads were quite loud and a little obnoxious.
Overall it was a great stop off.
