Gravel Pit / Old Telegraph Road Camp Review
Location: Shelburne, QLD
Location: Shelburne, QLD
This free campsite was a gravel pit just off the OTT – a perfect base for self-sufficient travellers who believe that ‘home is where you park her’.
This camping spot was a gravel pit just off the Old Telegraph Track, about 500 metres in from Bamaga Road in Shelburne. The site proved to be the perfect base for exploring nearby waterfalls and the southern end of the OTT. An ideal camping spot for fully self-sufficient travellers.

This campsite was literally a gravel pit, and is the reason we love the expression ‘home is where you park her’. We found this gravel pit on the northern end of the southern part of the OTT to call home for a night, which put us really close to Twin Falls, Elliott Falls, The Sauce Pan, Fruit Bat Falls and OTT.
If you have a large van and are self sufficient, this site provides an excellent way to position yourself conveniently to both the track and the falls. We were blessed to have an epic sunset that made the place feel much more glamorous than a gravel pit.
Fires are permitted here, but we opted against one due to the high winds when we visited.
We only needed to stay one night here.
Thanks for a great review. Sounds like a perfect base to leave the van and explore the falls. We will be there in a few weeks. So excited!
Its a great place to leave your van while you have a bit of fun for sure.Just lock your stuff up as there were so road crew around that looked a little dodgy
