Gravel Bay Campground wasn’t a free campsite, but instead required a Bush Camping Permit that gives you access to 19 different campgrounds on the Yorke Peninsula. We purchased a 28-day permit for $150 (you can see the pricing options here).
This was definitely one of the nicest sites we’ve come across. There were three spots available on top of the cliff which we were lucky enough to score. It was beautiful blue skies up there, with views that overlooked the location which was amazing! Granted it was a little more exposed up the top.
There were another two big camping areas at the bottom of this campground. One would probably fit three vans, and the other four vans. We would recommend a 4WD to get into these areas, and if towing a trailer or van you may want to walk it first. There were a lot of soft traverses to get through and some of the gradients were a bit funky for towing big vans.
There was no power or water, and it was a good half hour drive to get water so make sure you have some on board before visiting. There were no toilets, although there was a drop toilet five minutes down the road that could be used.
Whilst we got some phone service, it was patchy and non-existent of an evening.
It was a very peaceful and relaxing spot. We went for a walk along the cliff and checked out some amazing beaches with white sand, the clearest blue waters and stunning orange rocks. There was swimming, fishing, and snorkelling – we were fortunate enough to have the whole beach to ourselves!
Corny Point was only 20 minutes away and had a store to pick up basics, as well as a fish and chips shop that was perhaps the best we’ve come across yet!
