Grampians Old Man Emu Stay was like a farm stay on a private property about a kilometre from the owner’s house. It was a big paddock with sectioned off areas. The owner had put in tables, chairs and fire places, so you could park your van right near a fire place.
The owners were really friendly, easy going people. They came over every day to have a yarn and give the kids chocolates. There were sheep walking around, kangaroos, lots of birds, and emus everywhere. It was really nice to see so much wildlife. Dogs were welcome too, so long as they weren’t chasing the sheep. It was not hard to see why this place had such good reviews!
There was no power or drinking water, so campers need to be completely self sufficient. There was some bore water available if needed.
Access into this campsite was really easy, with lots of room for big rigs and buses too. Camping was also allowed in tents as long as you had your own chemical toilet facilities that are then taken away with you.
Cost was very reasonable at $15 a night per van for up to four people, with additional travellers costing an extra $2 per head.
It was a convenient location for visiting Halls Gap, which was only five minutes away and had awesome restaurants, cafes, and things to go check out. The Halls Gap Zoo was a minute down the road and was probably the best zoo we’ve ever been to! It was really interactive, had a lot of diverse animals, and the kids absolutely loved it!
