Location: Byfield National Park, QLD
The Pandanus camping area is part of the Casuarina Campground, and is nestled in the foredunes of Nine Mile Beach, just north of Rockhampton in Queensland. It is 32km east of Water Park Creek and 6km south of Nine Mile Access Track, and is part of the Byfield National Park. The campsites are accessed via the beach, and provide easy access for swimming, fishing or beach walking.
The campground has no defined camping areas, so sites are secured on a first in, best dressed system. There are a total of four defined open camping areas, all of which are sign-posted and accessed from the beach.
This campground has no amenities of water, and is only suitable for tents and off-road camper trailers.

The Casuarina Campground at Nine Mile Beach was a pleasant spot to stop over. We couldn’t take our caravan as it was a tent and camper trailer location only, but the beautiful sunrises meant we hardly even noticed this!
The sites were grass and sand, and campers were able to pick their fav spot as all sites were unmarked. This could be a problem during busy times, but it was quiet when we visited so we were able to score a prime beach front location all to ourselves. Fires were also permitted in an enclosed fire pit with milled wood, so long as all ashes were taken when we left.
We would recommend a high clearance and capable 4WD as the sand up ‘Big Sandy’ hill was quite steep and on hot days with no rain could be very soft. Once on the beach it was a short 10 minute drive to four different campgrounds.
The whole family enjoyed playing on the beach, but we wouldn’t want to stay more than a night or two. It was quite a windy spot, and only suitable for fully self-sufficient travellers.
